  • Anita Bryant championed the gay rights opposition group Save Our Children, which led Dade County voters to repeal a gay rights ordinance in June, 1977. The campaign ruined the singer's career, but it shined a national spotlight on the constitutional rights of homosexuals. As Miss Oklahoma, Bryant was runner-up in the 1959 Miss American contest. She was spokesperson for the Florida citrus industry from 1968 to 1980. She survived a nervous breakdown, addiction to pills and divorce to become what she called a "walking miracle."
